Cash, card and split payments at the till

The Termino till has three payment options: “Cash”, “Card” and “Split”. With cash, the till works out the change. With card, you run the amount on the bank terminal first and then confirm it. With split, you enter the card part and the cash part fills itself in. Card payments are not counted in the shift's expected cash.

Why it goes wrong

Money most often goes missing at payment for three reasons: the cashier works out the change in their head and gets it wrong, records a card payment that never went through on the terminal, or records a mixed payment as all cash or all card. In that last case the day's total is right, but the cash in the drawer doesn't match what it should be. A card mistake often only shows up at the end of the month, when sales are compared with the bank statement.

How to do it in Termino

  1. 1

    Cash and change

Choose “Cash” and enter the amount the customer gave you, or press “Exact amount”. The amount to hand back appears under “Change”. If the amount received is less than the total, the till shows how much is missing and won't confirm the payment. Finally, press “Confirm”.

  2. 2

    Card

Choose “Card”, run the amount on the bank terminal, and press “Confirm card payment” only after the terminal has approved the payment. The terminal isn't connected to the till, so the till can't see whether the payment went through.

  3. 3

    Split: part card, part cash

Choose “Split” and enter the “Card amount”: the “Cash amount” fills itself in, and the two always add up to the total. Run the card part on the terminal, press “Continue”, then enter the cash received for the cash part and press “Confirm”.

  4. 4

Check at the end of the shift

In the “End shift” window, “Expected cash” counts the opening cash, cash sales and cash movements, so the card part of a split payment doesn't change the drawer count. The owner sees payment methods in the system, in the “Transactions” report and on the home page.

  5. 5

    Receipt

After you confirm, “Sale recorded” appears and, if a printer is connected, the receipt prints. If the customer needs the receipt again, open “Sales history”, select the sale and then press “Reprint”.

Frequently asked questions

The customer gave me less money than the total. What happens?

If the amount received is less than the total, the Termino till shows how much is missing and won't confirm the payment.

I chose the wrong payment method by mistake.

Before you confirm, press the back arrow in the top left corner of the window and choose another method. Once a sale is confirmed, the only way to change it in Termino is a return.

Is the card terminal connected to the till?

No. Card payments happen on the bank terminal, and the Termino till only records them when the cashier confirms them.

Why don't the till's card payments match the terminal's total?

Most often the cashier confirmed a card payment at the till but it didn't go through on the terminal, or the other way round. The Termino till can't see the terminal, so confirm a card payment only after the terminal approves it, and at the end of the day compare the “Transactions” report with the terminal's daily total.

How do I refund a customer who paid by card?

When processing a return in Termino, the cashier chooses the refund method, “Cash” or “Card”, and it can differ from the original payment. A cash refund is automatically subtracted from the shift's expected cash.
